One day I was wondering why everyone shows the required test where the 2×4 is shot at a brand new screen. Some bounce off the screen and others keep right on going trough the screen. They of course fail the test. The manufacturer then sets up a new screen and the try it again until the 2×4 bounces off. Ahhh the sweet smell of success. The main problem with that is that in the Real-World, there aren’t any do-overs. Once, is all that you get. You either stop the object of something breaks. So, I wanted to show what would happen with our screen after it was beaten up a bit and NOT new.
So, we located an old piece of fabric that we used for testing, cut it to size and then I cut a 6” slit in the screen just to see what would happen. The next two videos shows what we found. The first video shows an 8’x8’ screen supporting about 1,200 pounds that we found around our shop, most of those pounds come from our Pizza Fridays.
The next video shows the SAME screen under a lot more stress. This is the drop test. We set up a forklift so that we could drop object from 12’ above the screen surface. We started out by dropping lighter object (like our competitors like to show) and built up to heavier objects. In this case, we ended by bouncing 30-pound, rough concrete construction blocks with sharp edges, pointed corners and a rough texture. We wound up with a pile of broken concrete blocks in the center of the screen.
This third video shows the competitive NEW screen that we tested using the same 12-foot, concrete construction block, drop test. We set up a forklift to the same 12-foot height above the screen surface and started dropping blocks.
The first block that was dropped cut into the screen, the #3 block cut it again, block #5 another hole and then block #7, SWOOSH, ALL NET, the entire block blasted through the screen. TOTAL FAIL.
